Wethouse should go ahead
National Committee for Addiction Treatment urges wethouse to go ahead.
The National Committee for Addiction Treatment (NCAT) today strongly endorsed the initiative to establish a wethouse in Wellington.
“We endorse this initiative. It fits within the range of addiction treatments and has been shown to work,” said co Chair Robert Steenhuisen.
“Within the continuum of care this facility meets a real need for people with long term homelessness and alcohol dependency.”
“It is important to have initiatives such as this. They deal with the specific needs of this section of our community for whom other services are not effective,” he said.
At a time of significant financial constraint, it is vital to consider that much welfare and health expenditure to the homeless is poorly coordinated and consequently inefficient.
The wethouse initiative is a unique opportunity to provide efficient and humane assistance to a marginalized group of people.
NCAT urges the Capital and Coast DHB and the Wellington City Council to do what they can to make this project happen.
