Supplements assist eye health

Supplements assist eye health and reduce visual fatigue from computer use

During Save our Sight month this September people are being encouraged to protect their vision and look after their eyes.  Natural supplements can assist with maintaining eye health for people as they age and those who spend a lot of time working on computers.

According to a recent Japanese study from Kwansei Gakuin University, regularly taking natural supplements such as omega-3 and lutein reduces the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  The study adds to the ever growing body of scientific research that supports the use of supplements to maintain eye health.

The Japanese study identified that visual fatigue may be eased by taking a daily dose of lutein, zeaxanthin and blackcurrant extract, of which New Zealand is a producer.

Dr. Shaun Holt, a medical researcher and author of ‘Natural Remedies That Really Work’ agrees that supplements can help to maintain eye health.

"Reputable studies have shown that omega-3 supplements can protect older people from macular degeneration.  Given the increasing number of people who spend a lot of time in front of computer screens, the finding that lutein can help maintain visual acuity and improve contrast sensitivity has the potential to help many people,” he says.

As well as the proven benefits of omega-3 on cardiovascular and neurological health, it is also recognised as being beneficial for eye health, particularly in the elderly.

A diet high in omega-3 fatty acids may prevent the development of AMD, the leading cause of blindness in people aged over 55 but the benefits of omega-3 are not isolated to adults.  Essential fatty acids should be a daily part of children’s diets as they assist visual development.

“Regularly taking omega-3 and lutein-based supplements to support eye health is being proven in international studies time and again,” says Michelle Palmer, Executive Director, Natural Products New Zealand.

“Supplements which assist visual development for children as they grow and which maintain eye health as people age are readily available in New Zealand from world class producers.  Continued growth of the natural products market shows that people are taking advantage of this,” says Ms Palmer.
