‘Number Ones for Everyone’ – 10 staff at Foodtown Kelston lose their locks and raise $3,000 for Fresh Future Appeal – National total nears $500,000
It brought a few tears to her eyes, but Marie Lagaluga was still happy that she’d raised over $1,000 yesterday by having her lovely long hair shorn for charity.
“I really haven’t cut it in nine years, so I was in shock. But I really wanted to do something for the Fresh Future Children’s Hospital Appeal – I wanted to give back for all the care I’ve received,” said Marie, explaining why this was so personal to her. For two years she has been battling a rare, life-threatening cancer of the digestive tract.

Marie and nine colleagues at Foodtown Kelston got Number One haircuts and raised $3,000 all up. When this amount is added to other fundraising events this week - like Saturday’s Fresh Future Duathalon and Gala at Massey Park Stadium from 9a-2pm – the total is expected to crack $500,000, with under three weeks to go.
More than $2 million has been raised in the last two years for 10 children's hospitals and dedicated paediatric wards right throughout New Zealand.
Over 18,000 staff from Countdown, Foodtown, Woolworths, SuperValue, Fresh Choice and Dick Smith - and from the DHBs themselves - team up for this enormously important appeal, which runs from 3 Aug to 27 Sept. Fundraising efforts include head shavings, golf tourneys, raffles, coinbox donations, etc etc etc.
"We are committed to supporting children's health, and that's why we get stuck-in and support the Fresh Future Appeal. We all want children in hospital, their families and the medical staff who treat them to have the best equipment and facilities possible. The $2 million raised in the last two appeals has been a huge help to hospitals, and we are keen to do even better this year!" says Peter Smith, Managing Director of Progressive Enterprises.
Hospitals that have benefited from the Fresh Future Appeal include those in: Auckland (Kidz First), Waikato, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Whangarei, Bay of Islands, Hawke's Bay, Invercargill and Greymouth.
