National Clinical Network Supported By Senior Drs

“Announcement Of Lastest Clinically Led National Clinical Network Supported By Senior Doctors”

“The announcement of the formation of the new clinically national fetal medicine network by Health Minister Tony Ryall is strongly supported by senior doctors,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today. Mr Powell was referring to the $115,000 start up funding and an ongoing $402,000 per year for this new network.

It follows Mr Ryall’s earlier announcement of the national cardiac clinical network "This highly specialised, highly critical and highly intensive service is provided by a small number of very skilled specialist obstetricians. This care for a relatively small number of mothers can’t be provided effectively and efficiently if left to individual district health boards on their own.”

“It is best provided by a nationally coordinated service that is developed and led by clinicians with expertise and experience in fetal medicine. The service would include access to protocols for assessing rare conditions, referral to diagnostic testing and specialised treatment, and an education programme.”

“The Ministry of Health also deserves praise for its role in the development of this new clinical network. Without the Ministry’s support and facilitating it would not have happened. We have been impressed with the way in which the Ministry has become increasingly relevant to and supportive of clinical needs and initiatives in DHBs.”

“The formation of this very much needed new network is consistent with our longstanding and consistent advocacy of national and regional clinical networks. It is great that we are being listened to” concluded Mr Powell.
