Top Gynaes to speak to Endometriosis Waikato meeting
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Young Gynaecologist of the Year, Lakshmi Ravikanti, and her mentor, VP Singh, will be speaking on “Endometriosis Treatment Guidelines” and “Adolescent Endometriosis”, in Hamilton this Wednesday.
The presentations are part of the information programme offered by Endometriosis Waikato, a community organisation supporting women with endometriosis.
Annette Evans, from Endometriosis Waikato said “We are delighted to host speakers of this calibre at our meetings. A special invitation is extended to teen girls and their parents as well as health professionals supporting women of all ages with endometriosis.”
“Many are not aware that endometriosis can affect teen girls. Facing a chronic condition as a teenager brings extra challenges for the teen, her family and health professionals.” Annette said
Endometriosis is very common, affecting an estimated 1-in-5 women and teenage girls and can dramatically impair quality of life.
The most common symptom of endometriosis is painful periods, characterised by taking pain relief, bed rest and time off work or studies. Endometriosis is also a leading cause of fertility problems.
Women of all ages need to recognise that painful periods are not normal and seek medical help, asking their GP for a referral to a gynaecologist specialising in endometriosis.
Lisa Hall, formerly a Hamilton student, knows first-hand the problems faced by teens with endometriosis: “I had a lot of time of school with very heavy periods with a gripping, twisting pain that radiated from my stomach to my legs. Although I attended a girls school I found it very difficult to explain to anyone how I felt so unwell. It was a very lonely time for me.”
Women and teen girls facing endometriosis can turn to Endometriosis Waikato for credible information, education and emotional support. Services also include structured night classes through Fairfield College, and presentations titled “Endowhat? – What every women should know about endometriosis” are available to community organisations and workplaces.
“Endometriosis Waikato can demystify endometriosis to enable women to make informed decisions about treatment options. It is important that women and their families aren’t left facing a significant health problem in isolation” said Annette.
“Endometriosis Waikato extends a huge thank you to Dr’s Ravikanti and Singh for giving up their time and sharing their expertise. Thanks also to CCS Disability Action for providing the venue.”
The public meeting will be held at CCS Disability Action, Claudelands Road, Hamilton, on Wednesday 27 May from 7:30pm. A gold coin donation is appreciated.
