SUBJECT: New DVD Aims To Spark Interest In Lab Careers
A career at Canterbury Health Laboratories is a great choice for young people with an interest in science.
That is the message of a new DVD called Canterbury Health Laboratories - The People, the Science, the Future, which has gone live on http://labnet.co.nz/labnet/chldvd.html The DVD has been created to promote the profession of medical laboratory scientist to the public, particularly secondary school students considering career options.
“The aim is to spark interest in this exciting career as we have an ageing workforce within the industry,” says Canterbury Health Laboratories (CHL) General Manager Trevor English.
Featuring lively interviews with young people who have been on the CHL Lab Intern Programme, the DVD will be shown to Year 13 students at secondary schools in the Christchurch area. The Intern Programme is a valuable Gap Year for students. They gain interesting experience doing laboratory work under supervision while earning a salary for 12 months before they enter university.
The DVD will also be offered to Careers Advisors and Science Teachers and screened at Career Expos and Work Choice Days.
As well as depicting how varied and intellectually stimulating a career in Medical Laboratory Science can be, the DVD also gives a fascinating insight into medical laboratory testing in New Zealand. In it, CHL staff describe the many different types of tests carried out and talk about the work they do.
