Students scoop Wgtn Pacific Health Scholarships

Whitireia students scoop up all of this year’s Wellington Pacific Health Scholarships

Since 2004 the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the Ministry of Health have been awarding scholarships for Pacific health students. Five were awarded in Wellington region this year, with students from Whitireia Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific) and postgraduate programmes scooping up all five.

At the award ceremony, Dr Apisalome Talemaitoga Chief Advisor Pacific, Ministry of Health and Everdina Fuli, Manager of Pacific Health Research, presented the students with their scholarships.

“We are really thankful for the support provided to the health system by Pacific students that come through Whitireia, said Dr Talemaitoga. It’s great to have graduates that can attend to Pacific people with the knowledge and skill set that they need.”

Luana Penese spoke on behalf of the students. “It is such an honour to be studying and to have our studies acknowledged and supported. Our tutors, family and peers have made this all possible and we couldn’t do it without them.”

The Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific) is a three year degree that focuses on the health needs of Pacific and non-pacific communities within a New Zealand context. The Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific) was first offered at Whitireia in 2004, the first of its kind in the country.

Whitireia is acclaimed for its excellence in Postgraduate qualifications and provides further education to students from seven regional District Health Boards.
