Don’t let drinking ruin your holiday season
With Christmas and New Year just around the corner Toi Te Ora - Public Health is urging people in the Bay of Plenty and
Lakes districts to think about their drinking to make sure the season is fun and safe for everyone.
“It’s important to remember what the holiday season is really about – celebrating and spending time with people we care
about and this can so easily be ruined when people drink too much,” said Regional Manager Graeme Savage.
“With warmer weather, longer sunshine hours and holidays, there are lots of opportunities to catch up with friends and
family and have a few drinks. Unfortunately, when people go overboard with alcohol it can cause problems and get in the
way of what could have been a great time,’ he said.
Host Responsibility Specialist Dawn Meertens recommends taking some simple steps to help make sure the holiday season is
a safe one:
• make sure there are plenty of non-alcohol and low-alcohol options at get togethers so people have a choice about what
they drink and can take a break from drinking alcohol
• provide substantial food – asking people to bring a plate is a great option
• watch the size of the drinks you’re having. Remember a standard drink is one small wine glass (100ml) and not a
bucket!
• plan how to get home safely if you’re drinking – or if you’re the host make sure your guests do the same
