Happy holidays = don't bet on it

"Staying away from all forms of gambling this year is the best policy for a happy Christmas", says David Coom of the Problem Gambling Foundation "Times are especially tough this Christmas, and some people think that a quick flutter or a bet is the way to solve financial strain"

"But the pokie machines and other forms of betting are a sure way to lose the money put aside for this time of year and wind up worse off than you were before" Every year the Problem Gambling Foundation is inundated with calls from people who have lost all of their holiday savings "They think they can earn a little extra for Christmas, but they end up losing everything, even the money to put food on the table" Mr Coom says there are certain steps people can take to avoid ruining Christmas for themselves and their families.

"Stay away from all forms of gambling until you have paid for everything. That includes presents, food and a budget for your other expenses" "If you are tempted by gambling, try and stay away from your local venues or anywhere that allows betting until after Christmas is over" "Spend TIME with your family. This is the greatest gift you can give. You are far more valuable spending time with them than sitting at a machine. Be sociable instead of anti-social" "Keep reminding yourself if you gamble you will lose"

"Leave your credit card at home if you think you are going somewhere that might lead to you gambling" Mr Coom also asks for increased host responsibility at this time of year "If any venue workers or owners see someone gambling for long periods of time, please step in and make sure they are OK and not over spending" "If they were one of your relatives, you would want them to be responsible with the money that is there for their whole family" For further information please contact: David Coom Communications Director
