Healthier Children's Breakfast A Winner At Massey Food Awards
A leading breakfast cereal has tasted success at the Massey Food Awards.
Hubbards’ Berry Berry Good has won the Heart Foundation Tick programme Healthier Choice Award, with category judges labeling the sugar content significantly lower compared to many other children’s novelty cereals.
Dietician and category judge Rhodi Smith says Berry Berry Good is low in sodium and has significantly less sugar than many other children’s cereals, providing a more balanced start to the day.
“Hubbards is showing innovation and market leadership by taking a health focus in breakfast cereals and creating a product that will appeal to children,” says Miss Smith, Tick’s nutrition manager.
Tick national manager Ian Mathieson says the award is timely with current concerns over the nutritional content of children’s breakfast cereals.
“It’s more important than ever to encourage manufacturers to put the health of Kiwi kids first,” says Mr Mathieson.
“This is an example of that. A number of products developed by Hubbards over the years have been formulated to gain Tick approval, and it is encouraging to see these efforts to bring healthier breakfasts to our tables.”
Mr Mathieson says that despite many breakfast cereals being marketed to appear nutritious, shoppers are increasingly aware that they can be high in saturated fat, salt and kilojoules.
“Hubbards' Berry Berry Good breakfast cereal stands out as a healthier choice in a market becoming crowded with sugary kiddy pleasers,” he says.
Miss Smith says all breakfast cereals with the Tick are independently tested and approved to meet standards for fibre and reduced levels of sodium, kilojoules and saturated fat.
To be eligible for the Heart Foundation Tick programme Healthier Choice Award a product must meet the Tick’s nutrition standards for its food category.
Hubbard Foods Limited CEO Doug Paulin says this is a ringing endorsement for Hubbards’ belief in offering healthier choices as part of their cereal range.
“Berry Berry Good is a fantastic tasting product, as well as being better for our kids," says Mr Paulin.
