NZEI Acknowledges Contribution Of Brian Donnelly
The education union NZEI Te Riu Roa is saddened to learn of the death of former NZEI member and New Zealand First MP Brian Donnelly.
Mr Donnelly worked in education for 25 years before entering politics and was a long time member of NZEI during his time as a teacher and principal.
He was the Associate Minister of Education from 1996-99 and supported NZEI and its members in the fight for pay parity. He was also a staunch advocate for improved staffing in primary schools.
Until last year he was New Zealand First’s education spokesperson and the Chair of parliament’s Education and Science select committee. His knowledge of the issues and his relationship with the education sector were highly regarded.
NZEI President Frances Nelson says Brian Donnelly was a good friend to NZEI.
“His ability to consider issues from an education perspective rather than from a solely political one, was greatly appreciated. He was a respected educator and politician who gave his full support to quality public education and always worked in the interests of teachers and children.”
