GP takes over as chair of medical education body
Auckland GP Dr Jonathan Fox has been elected Chair of the Council of Medical Colleges. Dr Fox is currently in his second
term as President of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, the only solely Kiwi College on the
council. Other Colleges are generally Australasian.
Dr Fox takes over following today’s annual general meeting from prominent Canterbury surgeon Associate Professor Phil
Bagshaw. CMC was established to allow the Colleges to discuss issues of common interest and to enable them to share
knowledge, objectives and policies to inform and advise Ministers, Government agencies and other relevant bodies on
relevant health issues.
The Colleges themselves are educational bodies responsible for the training, examination, and subsequent recertification
of medical practitioners in specific medical disciplines. They are also institutions for continuing medical education.
This enables them, both collectively as CMC and individually as Medical Colleges, to provide for the community the
highest quality of medical care delivered in accordance with accepted clinical principles and to improve, protect, and
promote the public health.
