ACC’s Activesmart Website Honoured at International “Webby” Internet Awards

ACC’s sports injury prevention and fitness website, ActiveSmart, has been selected as an Official Honouree for the ``Health’’ category in the 12th Annual Webby Awards.

The 2008 Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries from more than 60 countries. Only ten entries were declared Official Honourees in the Health Section.

The ACC ActiveSmart website offers personalised training plans, nutritional advice, diagrams and videos of training techniques, email reminders, a regional events calendar, and a five day weather forecast. Linked to ActiveSmart there are specialised websites for netball, snow sports and soccer, offering targeted fitness and injury prevention information.

ACC figures record that New Zealanders made 422,000 claims for injuries from sport and recreational activities in 2006/07, while 96 people died as a result of their injuries. ActiveSmart is aimed at helping New Zealanders get fit and healthy while avoiding injury.

Known as ``the internet’s Oscars’’, the Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the internet. Established in 1996, the Webbys are presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-member body of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.

``The Webby Awards honours the outstanding work that is setting the standards for the Internet,’’ said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. ``ActiveSmart's Official Honouree selection is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators.’’

ActiveSmart was set up a year ago and in that time has attracted more than 23,000 members. ACC’s Injury Prevention team leader Simon Gianotti said he is delighted that the website has been honoured by such a prestigious group after only 12 months in operation.

``The feedback we have had from ActiveSmart users has proven time and time again that the site is a valuable tool in getting New Zealanders fit and keeping them safe while they play. This recognition by the Webby Awards is a fantastic addition.’’

``We already know that ActiveSmart is used by New Zealanders living overseas and we hope that this honour will introduce more people from around the world to ActiveSmart and ACC’s injury prevention tips.’’
