Local Girls Win National Food Safety Competition
Local representatives from the New Zealand Food Safety Authority are delighted to announce that a group of three girls
from Hastings Girls High (Meleane Filipo, Hariru Hawkins and MaryAnne Time) with assistance and encouragement from their
teacher and principal, Noleen Stewart and Geraldine Travis respectively, were the winners of this year’s Food Safe for
Life Competition. The Competition, open to all Year 13 high school students was held via the Food Safe Partnership
website.
What is the New Zealand Food Safe Partnership?
The Foodsafe Partnership is a group of representatives from government and businesses, administered by the New Zealand
Food Safety Authority that promotes safe food practices throughout the country. For details visit the website:

What was the competition/prize?
Entrants were asked to design a simple resource using key food safety messages for new home leavers. Prizes won by the
Hastings Girls High team included: a 30 GB iPod, a fully paid trip to Parliament to meet the Minister of Food Safety,
Annette King, movie tickets, food and product vouchers and prizes for the school. This competition was only open to
people in their final year at school.
Judges said their entry was very good as it stood apart from the others largely due to the songs recorded by the girls
about hand washing. Two versions of the song were recorded and the rap version was described as “catchy and ingenious”
and would appeal to the target-market of young people leaving home.
