Age Related Residential Care Review Released Today
The Otago and Southland District Health Boards (DHBs) have completed a regional review of age related residential care in their districts and this has been released to the public today.
The DHBs key focus is to ensure that there is an equitable distribution of age related residential capacity in place across the region and the review has found that in general this is the case.
However the review has found that there are specific issues with the provision of Rest Home capacity in Wanaka and Long Term Hospital Level Residential Care in Queenstown.
The review has also found that in the long term these issues will be addressed by privately owned providers with evidence that this process is already underway.
A number of options to address the interim (two to three years) issues in Queenstown are continuing to be investigated by the Southland DHB and the DHB remains open to any further suggestions.
An interim option being considered is to work alongside an existing provider. This would involve converting about six existing Rest Home level beds into long-term Hospital level residential beds to supplement the existing six beds on the Lakes District hospital site which would remain open.
The option of converting two existing acute hospital beds within the Lakes District hospital into Hospital level residential beds is being considered however this may not be necessary if the option of working with an existing provider is taken up.
In the long term the Otago and Southland DHBs do not determine the location or capacity of age related residential care beds. However the DHBs do have an important role to play and can assist by providing accurate information to help providers make good investment decisions.
It is of mutual benefit for Otago and Southland DHBs and the public for there to be an equitable and sustainable configuration of services in the provision of age related residential care in the region.
