CDHB Begins Process To Demolish Old Christchurch Women’s Hospital Buildings
The Canterbury District Health Board voted today to progress with the demolition of the old Christchurch Women's Hospital buildings, given that they will be of no practical use in the future.
The process will include obtaining required consents and discussions with relevant parties, such as the Historic Places Trust, and the eventual demolition of the Colombo St buildings.
In a report to the Board, Site Redevelopment Manager Bryan Spinks said "the state, type and layout of the buildings on the site dictate that they offer no value or future to CDHB but are in fact an ongoing financial liability to maintain as they fall into further disrepair and in addition present a risk to the safety of intruders."
Mr Spinks told the Board that it was likely the buildings would be demolished within the next 18 months. The CDHB is awaiting the completion of its Health Services Planning project, which will provide the Board with information to allow it to make a decision on the site’s future.
The old Christchurch Women's Hospital buildings have been vacant since March 2005, when CDHB's Women's Health Division moved to the new purpose built hospital, next to Christchurch Hospital.
