Dads-to-Be Get New Resource

Dads-to-Be Get New Resource
29 AUGUST, 2007

Father’s-to-Be are being acknowledged this Father’s Day, with the release of Family Planning’s latest educational resource “New Dads.”

Available free from Family Planning, the resource is designed for fathers-to-be and gives tips on how they might prepare for their new role.

“While the mother-to-be is most often the focus of attention during her pregnancy, Family Planning identified a need for accessible quality information focussing on the fathers-to-be,” says Family Planning Chief Executive Jackie Edmond.

Men preparing for fatherhood may experience a range of feelings, from excitement through to anxiety and apprehension. Becoming a father can be one of the most rewarding times in a man’s life – and one of the most stressful.

“New Dads” is not a parenting manual but an introduction to how becoming a father changes men’s lives. It contains lots of practical suggestions from fathers about preparing for the birth of the baby, and life after the birth, baby equipment and clothing, and links to some other parenting resources.

‘All the feedback we’ve had from dads and mums is about the importance of maintaining communication with your partner. Our New Dads resource has also been “road tested” by a range of new dads to ensure our information is relevant to as broad a range as possible of new dads-to-be,” Ms Edmond says.

“We are distributing this resource through our resource unit and through our team of health promoters. Family Planning clinics will also have copies they can make available. People can also order copies free of charge through our website www.fpanz.org.nz “.
