Strike actions will disrupt services

Due to strike action by members of the Service and Food Workers and Medical Laboratory Workers unions services at Hawke’s Bay and Wairoa Hospitals will be disrupted.

Services affected include food preparation, orderly, cleaning, some home care services, and some elective surgery and laboratory services.

The Service and Food Workers strike starts on Friday 1 June and at this stage is scheduled to continue until 13 June. The Medical Laboratory Workers strike is planned to run from 8am Tuesday 5 June until 8am Tuesday 19 June.

Says Warrick Frater, HBDHB’s chief operating officer: “Our contingency plans will ensure patients are well-cared for over this period, however we are asking people to keep the emergency department for emergencies and should contact their family doctor unless it is an emergency.”

Mr Frater also advises people visiting the hospital that the hospital café Zacs will be closed for the duration of the strike and adds “We regret that visitors to the hospital as well as our staff will be inconvenienced over this period, however we have to reduce services where we can, in order to make sure patients continue to receive safe and appropriate care.”
