FPA failing NZ young people

Monday 21.05.07

Family Planning Association still not supplying the full facts about condom inadequacy

This week the Family Planning Association (FPA) and Durex have jointly launched New Zealand’s first ever condom week, but what has been lacking from all their promotion so far has been the full facts about condom failure rates and their inability to protect from major sexual diseases.

“Condom week is simply an opportunity for Durex to promote its product and the FPA to inflict more of its seriously flawed sexual ideologies upon New Zealand young people”says Family Life International media spokesperson Brendan Malone.

“Even the press release from the FPA and Durex contains serious factual error when it states that condoms are “the most reliable source of protection against STIs, HIV/AIDs and unwanted pregnancies.”

“This statement is typical of the FPA and it is completely unscientific and not supported by research regarding sexual diseases, many of which can still be transmitted even when condoms are used 100% correctly. The undeniable fact is that saving sexual activity and remaining faithful to one partner, not condom use, is and will always be, the MOST effective form of protection against sexual disease and unwanted pregnancy” says Brendan Malone.

“Sadly this advice is not even supported by the FPA, who simply continue to mislead New Zealand young people by completely overrating the protective abilities of condoms, and by misinforming young people about the real risks of sexual activity with more than one person.”

Family Life International reminds New Zealanders that the FPA and Durex’s own Youth and Condoms survey found that, despite more of the FPA’s condom promoting campaigns available to young people than ever before, the number of gonorrhoea cases has increased by a massive 52 per cent and chlamydia cases are up by almost 28 per cent.

Both diseases pose serious risks of infertility if left untreated and research shows that condoms provide little, if any, protection against either disease.

“What is most alarming is the fact that cases of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea have increased by 20% in the last six years, and now make up approximately one third of cases”says Brendan Malone.

“The FPA’s own research shows that their approach to human sexuality is completely lacking and is causing huge damage to the lives of New Zealand young people. When will the government stop funding the completely inadequate and so obviously flawed messages that the FPA is giving NZ young people about sex?” says Brendan Malone.
