The Baby Café – Hawke’s Bay: on the move next week
The Baby Café, a free drop-in clinic where new parents can get professional breast-feeding advice is moving down Omahu
Road. Their new rooms are on the Hawke’s Bay Hospital campus, at the rear of the Maori Health Unit’s whare, opposite the
shops in Omahu Road.
Entry to the Baby Cafe car park is via gate 11.
The Baby Café is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Parents are welcome to call in with their baby
and toddlers, and receive free expert breastfeeding advice in a supportive environment. All breast-feeding advisors are
qualified lactation consultants.
The Baby Café – Hawke’s Bay opened in Hastings in 2004 and is an initiative of Parents Centre, Hawke’s Bay with support
from Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB). The Hastings Baby Café was the first Baby Café to be established outside
of the United Kingdom.
The Baby Café’s Katie Askew said the numbers of women using the services of the Baby Café had grown steadily since it
moved onto the hospital campus. “We are now established as a credible service provider and we receive an increasing
number of referrals from other health providers.
“As an independent health service we are very grateful to the DHB for allowing us to use their facilities free of charge
and support the service with qualified Lactation Consultants from the DHB staff.
“While most women use the service when establishing breastfeeding in the early weeks with a new baby, women are
encouraged to visit Baby Cafe while they are pregnant right through to weaning” Katie Askew said.
