New Obesity Action Coalition Director Appointed
Media Release, 24 April 2007
Former Smokefree Coalition Director Leigh Sturgiss and latterly Programme Development Manager for the New Zealand Drug Foundation, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Obesity Action Coalition, following the resignation of Celia Murphy. Ms Murphy was director for 4 years.
“I am delighted to be appointed to this position,” said Ms Sturgiss. “This is an exciting time to become involved in this field and I am hopeful that my advocacy, communications and organisational skills will be beneficial to the Obesity Action Coalition.
“Regulating the heavy marketing of energy dense, low nutrient foods are a priority area for the Coalition along with requiring all schools to adopt and implement a comprehensive integrated food and nutrition policy which will help create a healthy environment.
“The Obesity Action Coalition is also concerned about the lack of leadership within the health sector, and would encourage a high level cross government approach to this issue as well as ensuring the physical activity sector is supported,” Ms Sturgiss said.
