Senior doctors union membership continues to grow

Tuesday 10 April 2007

"Senior doctors union membership continues to grow"

"Union membership by senior doctors continues to grow confirming the relevance and importance of unions to skilled professionals," said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

"Over the past 12 months (until 31 March) our membership has increased by a further 3.5% bringing it up to a total of over 2,800. Since the beginning of this decade senior doctor union membership has increased by over 43%."

"This high level of membership confirms that unions are relevant and important to all parts of the workforce whether skilled or unskilled, manual or professional. Unions provide a collective voice of specific workforces in their dealings with the collective and institutionalised voices of their employers and managers."

"We represent over 90% of senior doctors employed by district health boards, a significant statistic that health bosses should not forget in our current protracted national collective agreement negotiations," concluded Mr Powell.
