In a NUTS-shell

The National Unit of Testicular Support

In a NUTS-shell

NUTS is a charitable trust that is working with the Wellington Cancer Society and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand to promote the awareness of Prostate and Testicular Cancer. The method of promotion is the sale of highly fashionable , designer printed, male boxer shorts that also generate $10 of donation per pair sold.

The boxers are funded through sponsorship and donations and will generate thousands of dollars each year. NUTS has been bursting forward with passion since March of this year lead by Jonathan Eagle. The NUTS dream is to have men talking freely about their health and to be acting proactively towards their health. Early detection is the key!

Testicular Cancer Awareness
Testicular Cancer strikes men aged 15-35, and is often treatable if detected early. We wish to target young males and explain firstly the symptoms and secondly that it is okay to talk about this sensitive issue, and thirdly the importance of self-examination. There is a major problem with males' tendency to ignore a medical problem and hope it goes away.

We wish to create a healthy attitude in men regarding their health. By targeting the most unspoken about issue Testicular Cancer NUTS hopes to create a like minded attitude to all health issues. We wish to erase the negative stigma attached to this issue and we wish to highlight the importance of self-examination.

Prostate Cancer Awareness
Prostate Cancer primarily strikes men aged 50+ with a higher incidence in 65+ men. This cancer kills a similar if not larger amount of men each year than Breast cancer kills women, which is a cancer which is well talked about in our society. We wish to bring the same level of publicity to Prostate cancer through the NUTS campaign.

NUTS will be a long term campaign of awareness, by simultaneously focusing on Testicular cancer; we will create a medical-savvy mindset in the younger generation in the hope that when they reach the age of Prostate cancer risk, they will make smarter decisions in regards to medical check ups. Young people can help the cause by protecting their fathers and grandfathers and themselves in the future.

Strategy - How we can raise awareness and money from NUTS?
In a "nuts-shell”, following the brilliant example of the Glassons Breast Cancer T-Shirts, NUTS will be releasing a limited edition, annual range of Designer printed high quality and fashionable boxers. There will be a total of five different boxers in the NUTS range. Each pair has a different print on it that has been donated by a fashion designer.
2006 is NUTS first campaign which is a Wellington campaign of up to 2500 limited edition boxers, this will raise up to $25 000 the Cancer support services such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Cancer Society.

2007 will be the first National Campaign with up to 50 000 units, raising $500 000 for cancer support services.

The NUTS Designers
The designers who have generously donated their time, effort and name to NUTS are five of the latest men's fashion designers.
They are:
Mandatory
Four Fontaine
Natalie Rotman
Adrian Hailwood
Out There Clothing

The NUTS product
The boxers will be fitted trunk boxer briefs. This is a style that is highly appealing to our market, and suits the fashion trends of the tighter make trouser leg. There are five different NUTS boxers, one from each designer who has donated their designs to the NUTS Campaign. The overall result is a comfortable pair of boxer briefs with fashionable designs. They are limited edition, works of art!

In addition to the boxers, purchasers will find attached an information sheet on the facts of Prostate and Testicular cancer.

NUTS Retailers - Where can I get NUTS?
NUTS will be on sale in Wellington from December 8th 2006 at:
Mandatory on Cuba St
Out There Clothing on Customhouse Quay
Man to Man on Willis St,
Farry’s on Lambton Quay
Good as Gold on Victoria St

The Donation
Each pair will cost $29.99, $10 from each pair will go straight to the Cancer support services. It is important to NUTS that the amount donated is a significant proportion of the retail price, a third to be precise. NUTS also insist that there are no administration fees that are imposed on this $10 amount, it will simply be a matter of multiplying the amount of boxers sold in the campaign by 10 to reach the dollar amount that will be donated. The sum will be donated at the conclusion of the campaign.

The Beneficiaries
The Wellington Cancer Society and the Prostate Cancer Foundation are the primary beneficiaries of NUTS, however other charities may also be considered.

The article below was printed in the 16th of October, 25th episode of Victoria University’ Student magazine 'Salient’ 2006 .

It’s a fact. Guys just don’t like sharing their problems. This unwillingness to share is even more pronounced when the problem involves their “special area”.

I’m talking about Testicles and Prostate Glands. Testicular Cancer is the most common form of cancer found in men aged 15 – 35, and can spread rapidly to other parts of the body. Prostate Cancer is found largely in the 50 + age group, however in some cases men as young as 40 have contracted the disease. So surely, with as many as 2000 kiwi men being diagnosed and nearly 600 dying each year, it’s a topic that is fairly well known about and acknowledged in today’s liberal society, right? I mean, hell, we can talk about breast examination without anyone batting an eyelid.

The National Unit of Testicular Support otherwise known affectionately as NUTS was founded in March this year by five entrepreneurial students as part of a Victoria University Management paper. NUTS aims to dispel the negative stigmas attached with talking about Testicular Cancer and Prostate Cancer. NUTS Manager Jonathan Eagle has vision “to get Testicular Cancer and Prostate Cancer as much publicity as Breast Cancer, because the fairer sex has done a great job that we men need to emulate!”

Unfortunately Prostate and Testicular Cancer aren’t talked about and men don’t know the facts and symptoms, many find out too late. This brings us to NUTS…

Supported by both the Wellington Cancer Society Division and the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation; NUTS has big plans. They have generated an impressive range of boxer shorts which will raise both awareness and cash for their cause. The boxers are “sexy, styly and comfortable” claims one NUTS admirer. But this no surprise as they have had huge support from the fashion industry.

2006 will be a Wellington campaign and NUTS have recruited help from five great local and national designers, with a mix of established and up-coming-and brands. The Designer’s are: Mandatory; an iconic Cuba Mall Menswear brand, Four Fontaine (formally Four Forty); a hugely successful local label, Out There Clothing; a well known brand that started out of Arrowtown, Adrian Hailwood; a fashion designer that has been steadily climbing the fashion world’s ladder recently with the help of Anna Stretton, and last but not least NUTS have been lucky enough to work with Natalie Rotman; a brilliant senior design student at Massey.

Each Designer has contributed their artwork to appear on one of the five boxers in the range, creating a collectable set of five different NUTS boxers that retail at $29.99 each. From the sale of these boxers $10 will go to cancer support services such as the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Cancer Society to help those affected by cancer.

Jonathan Eagle sees the importance of humour to break the ice of such a sensitive topic, “by letting people have a bit of a laugh, hopefully they will be able to talk about these serious issues with their friends and family, that’s why we use such a provocative acronym, its funny, funky and grab’s your attention”.
“The message we want to send out is firstly its OK to talk about health issues and secondly the only way to minimise the effects of prostate and testicular cancer is to be proactive about early detection. For testicular Cancer, regular self examination is quick, simple and painless and it can save lives. NUTS recommends testicular self examination in the shower, as the tissues will be warm and relaxed, making in easier to detect a lump or increased size of testicle.”

The Prostate Cancer Foundation advocates annual prostate check ups with a GP for men aged 50 and over, and from age 40 in the case of family history of Prostate cancer.

NUTS will be running an annual boxer campaign to spread awareness about prostate and testicular cancer, with this year being the first Wellington Campaign and next year being the first National Campaign.

So support your NUTS and buy a pair of their brilliant briefs, they’re the perfect Christmas gift for your dad, brother, uncle, son or Granddad. Or just buy a pair because you probably need some flash new “going out” undies.

You’ll find NUTS in leading Wellington Menswear stores from December 1st.
