Unfair Allegations About Wanganui Hospital

“senior doctors upset over unfair allegations about wanganui hospital”

“Senior doctors working at Wanganui Hospital are upset about unfair and excessive allegations that their hospital is unsafe,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

“There are serious difficulties with senior doctor shortages in paediatrics and obstetrics which are influenced by the difficulties of recruiting to a smaller hospital in a highly competitive national and international medical employment market. But this does not mean the hospital is unsafe.”

“Wanganui has highly committed and skilled doctors, nurses and other health professionals. High quality care is provided in a range of services such as medical, surgical, anaesthesia, intensive care, laboratories, radiology and the emergency department.”

“The long term sustainability for child and women’s health services in Wanganui depends on close regional clinical and service collaboration with the neighbouring MidCentral District Health Board. With common sense, goodwill and a longer term view, this is achievable.”

“Turning shortages in two services into a generalised accusation of an unsafe hospital is an over-the-top unfair slight on the senior doctors and their health professional colleagues,” concluded Mr Powell.
