Campaign targets Otago’s 16-19 year olds

Last chance campaign targets Otago’s 16-19 year olds

16-19 year olds in Otago are the target for the final initiative by the Otago Meningococcal B campaign.

The Last Chance campaign offers young people in the target group the chance to win an X-Box, iPod or mobile phone if they text or email an entry to the campaign. The Otago meningococcal B campaign has one more month to run.

Otago meningococcal B campaign Sponsor Dr Roy Morris said the rate of vaccinations amongst 16-19 year olds in Otago was still not high enough.

“While we're tracking quite well against the national average, we are keen to get our numbers up in the last month (June) which is the focus of the Last Chance campaign targeting this important age group,” said Dr Morris.

“We always knew it was going to be hard to get their attention, let alone get them in the door to have three vaccinations six weeks apart.”

Dr Morris said a blitz of Dunedin and Otago towns was planned during June promoting the Last Chance campaign.

The campaign involves grabbing the attention of 16-19 year olds in Otago about the need to start (or complete) their meningococcal immunisations before 30 June through:

o a viral campaign around the “Last Chance” message – getting people talking about it, asking what it is.

o An Otago youth specific information website www.lastchance.org.nz

o The chance to win an X-Box, iPod or mobile phone

o A “paste up” campaign at sites around Dunedin and prominent places in other Otago communities “teasing” young people to visit the website and/or text to a number to enter into the prize draw and to receive further information about MeNZB

o Production of a small flyer about the campaign for distribution at cafes, the Uni, Polytech & other youth sites.

“Anyone in the age group is eligible to enter and win a prize as long as they live in Otago. They don't have to have been vaccinated,” said Dr Morris.

By entering the competition (by text or through the website) young people agree to receive 2 text messages asking them whether they've been vaccinated and offering support if they haven't.

For information about the campaign see www.lastchance.org.nz

To enter the competition young people should text "chance" to 027 602 1650

The competition opens the weekend of 3/4 June and closes at 5pm on 29 June. It will be drawn on 30 June.
