New Fellows

The following members received Fellowships at the Institute’s AGM in October 2005. Fellowships are conferred by the Institute each year for outstanding contribution to the accountancy profession and/or service to the community.

Northland Branch

Peter Hill
Peter has been a Chartered Accountant in sole practice in Whangarei since 1988.

He has also been Branch Secretary of the Northland Branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants since 1988. In this role Peter has been the driving force behind the Institute’s presence in Northland for many years, providing support for local and national events, and acting as an adviser and mentor to members (particularly those in public practice).

As the ‘public face’ of the Institute, he has always reflected credit on the profession – both in his role as Branch Secretary and in his wider life.

He owns and manages a 700-acre beef farm and is a member of the Simmental Breeders Association. He is also a Director of the Northland Stevedoring Company and the Chair of the Northport Audit Committee.

Auckland Branch

Andra Glyn-Jones
Andra is a partner in the Auckland office of Deloitte.

She leads the firm’s international assignment services team and is also actively involved in advising clients on domestic and international tax matters, including corporate restructuring, the effects of the international tax regime, trust legislation, finance and equity-based proposals and general planning, tax and GST planning and tax management issues.

She is the author of a number of works on accountancy.

Andra has served on the Advisory Board of Manukau Institute of Technology and is a member of the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust’s Board of Trustees.

As a strong supporter of the need to continually develop professional competencies, Andra is a regular presenter of tax seminars for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and has also presented courses as part of the Institute's professional development programme.

Her commitment to ensuring that Deloitte had a work environment that removed barriers to participation, particularly for women, led to Deloitte winning the Employer of Choice Award in 2004 (prior to Andra joining the EEO Trust Board).

She has been a member of the Institute’s National Tax Committee and has chaired the Auckland Branch Tax Committee for the last five years.

Nicholas Main
Nicholas is a partner in the Auckland Office of Deloitte, was the CEO of Deloitte from 2000 to August 2005, and is now Chair of Deloitte New Zealand.

A Chartered Accountant with 20 years’ experience in internal and external financial audit, Nick is responsible for the strategic direction of the firm. He leads the national partnership, and oversees the financial and operational management of the business.

His encouragement and support of Institute involvement has been a key driver to several partners and staff of Deloitte becoming involved in a variety of different roles, including committee representation and acting as presenters for professional development events.

Nick is also a member of the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development, the New Zealand Institute, the Committee for Auckland and the New Zealand Leadership Institute. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.

David Osborne
David Osborne is the Head of New Zealand Group Reporting at Westpac NZ. He has been with Westpac for 11 years, primarily specialising in financial markets accounting and infrastructure.

David has been a member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for three years – in 2003 and 2004 for Wellington and in 2005 for Auckland.

He also served on the Wellington Branch Committee, including two terms as Chair, and on branch and national committees, including the National Corporate Sector Committee of which he is currently Chair.

As well as his extensive contribution to the Institute, David has been heavily involved in his local community.

As Treasurer and Chair of his local Parish Council, David has led his parish to develop and implement a long-term strategy. He has also contributed to a number of other parish activities, including home groups, courses and roles in Sunday worship.

Wellington Branch

James Ogden
James Ogden is a business and investment consultant and company director.

His current board appointments include positions with NZ Post, Kiwibank, and Agriquality. He is also the Chairman of the Ministry of Social Development's Audit Committee.

James was an investment banker for 12 years – seven years as Country Manager for Macquarie Bank and five years as a director of Credit Suisse First Boston. Prior to investment banking, James worked in the New Zealand dairy industry for eight years in chief executive and finance roles.

James is a trustee of the Scots College Foundation and of the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation. He is current Chair of the Finance Committee of the Victoria University Council.

Ross Pritchard
Ross Pritchard is a senior manager with KPMG’s Audit division. He joined KPMG in 2001 after 17 years with the Reserve Bank.

Ross has been heavily involved with the Institute at both the local and national level for more than 15 years.

He was a member of the Wellington Branch Committee for 12 years, and chaired the Committee in 2000–2001.

Ross was elected to the Institute Council in 2004, and also serves on the Audit, Finance and Risk Management, Practical Experience, and Professional Development National Committees.

He was one of the initiators of the Executive Insight Programme in Wellington. This programme gives senior tertiary students an opportunity see the challenges and rewards of the profession as they “shadow” a top executive for a few days. Ross continues to actively support this programme.

He has been very active on the Branch Professional Development Committee, and is currently the adviser to the Young Accountants Group.

Marlborough-Nelson

Sue Malthus
Sue is a senior accounting lecturer at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, specialising in teaching auditing. Her research interests are accounting education and the accounting profession.

Sue is a Chartered Accountant, and worked for international accounting firms Arthur Andersen and KPMG in London, Hong Kong and Christchurch, for ten years prior to moving to Nelson in 1992. She completed her Masters of Management in Accounting through Massey University in 2003.

During her 13 years with NMIT, Sue has been appointed to many positions, including Head of School.

Her commitment to the quality of accounting education shows in the contribution she has made over the years on the Institute's Admissions Board and Academic Committee. She has also been an active member of other branch and national committees, and is involved in delivering and marking the professional development courses required for Institute membership. She also served as a member of the Institute’s Council from 1998 to 2004.

She has been a member of the judging panel for annual Commerce Nelson business awards and the Nelson Young Enterprise scheme.

Canterbury

Bruce Irvine
Bruce is the managing partner at Deloitte’s Christchurch office, where he specialises in corporate advisory services, business valuations, acquisitions and disposals, the development of organisation structures and their appropriate funding.

Bruce is a director of a number of companies including Jade Stadium Limited, Pyne Gould Corporation Limited, Marac Limited, Godfrey Hirst Limited, Market Gardeners Co-operative Limited, House of Travel Limited, Christchurch City Holdings Limited and Canterprise Limited. He was founding Chair of Jade Stadium Limited, and worked long hours to ensure that the stadium was built on time and to budget.

In a voluntary capacity, he serves as a board member of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and as a trustee of the Christchurch Art Gallery Trust, the Central Plains Water Trust and the Creative Industries Trust.

Bruce has also served on his local school board of trustees and has coached junior rugby.

Sydney Branch

Col Gibson
Col had a long and illustrious career first in commercial accounting and then in accounting education.

During nearly 40 years in education, he was instrumental in setting up, developing and teaching degree courses in accounting at universities in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.

He retired in 1992, but in that year undertook the first of 27 overseas volunteer projects in the Pacific Islands and Thailand. The projects varied from installing accounting packages in local businesses and training local staff to operate them, to designing and teaching business courses in universities.

Peter McGovern
Peter is the principal of McGovern Financial Services Pty Ltd, and company director of a number of businesses in Australia and New Zealand, including six unlisted companies, two dairy farms, Thakral Holdings Ltd and Kailua Ltd.

Peter’s work for the community, and particularly young people and families, includes many years on governance bodies for the Edmund Rice Foundation (which provides support for young people in crisis), the Mercy Family Life Centre (assistance for children and families), Loreto Kirribilli (a school for girls) and St Ignatius’ College.

Peter is also a Foundation Ambassador of the Museum of Contemporary Arts and a Foundation member of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Peter is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries.

Gerald Naughton
Gerald is head of the AMP Funds Team, responsible for ensuring the proper management of AMP Life’s $50 billion of funds. Gerald is a Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Investment Analysts and an Associate of the Securities Institute of Australia.

Gerald has served of Institute committees in both New Zealand and Australia for more than 14 years.

He currently represents the Australian Branches on the Council of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has been a judge for the Young Chartered Accountant of the Year Awards, and has contributed articles on corporate reporting to the Chartered Accountants Journal.

Among other community activities, he has provided financial guidance to low-income earners and aboriginal people in the Parkes and Forbes area under an AMP Foundation initiative.

Garry Tibbits
Garry is Professor of Accounting at the University of Western Sydney.

He has also held teaching posts at the University of Auckland, the University of New England and Wollongong University.

In addition to teaching at undergraduate level, Garry has successfully supervised masters and PhD students.

His research – which focuses on financial accounting, strategic planning and small business management – has been published in the United Kingdom, the United States, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.

Garry is a member of the Editorial Panel for the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand, and has recently served on an external review Committee of the Victorian University of Technology, giving advice on a wide range of procedures in both accounting and academic matters.
