Pacific Health Provider Workforce Awards

Ministry of Health Pacific Health Provider Workforce Awards

The Ministry of Health has contracted the Health Research Council to administer awards to Pacific students as part of the Ministry’s Pacific Health and Disability Action Plan, Workforce development.

The aim of the Awards programme is to support development of the Pacific Health sector and to contribute to the objectives of the Ministry’s Pacific Provider Development Initiative which are to:

- Encourage and support Pacific students to train in health or health management related topics;
- Build a highly skilled Pacific peoples health and disability workforce; and
- Address the paucity of trained Pacific healthcare workers and leaders.

The Awards are intended to provide one year of support for students studying towards a health or health related qualification. The scheme has been running for four years and there have been 144 award recipients (33 in 2003, 35 in 2004 and 38 in 2005). This year, there are 38 successful recipients. The assessing committee was comprised of experts within Pacific health, Dr Debbie Ryan (Chairperson), Mr Kiki Maoate, Dr Ieti Lima, Mr Malakai Ofanoa, Dr Margaret Southwick, Ms Margie Fepulea’i.

An awards dinner will be held at the Waipuna Hotel, Auckland on Wednesday 22 February to celebrate the achievements of the recipients for 2006. Keynote speakers will be Luamanuvao Winnie Laban, and Dr Karen Poutasi, CEO Ministry of Health.
