SKYCITY Hosts Mobile Breast Screening Unit

Today is Breast Cancer Awareness Day and the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s national Pink Ribbon fundraising day. The Foundation encourages people with any concerns to have them checked out.

A mobile Breast Screening unit is currently parked at SKYCITY until 13 October 2005, located at the base of Sky Tower, providing free mammograms and checks for women aged 45 to 69.

The unit has in the past, been mostly used in rural areas, but from early 2006 will be seen more often around central Auckland. There are full mammography facilities on board and anyone interested is invited to have a look around or ask any questions. It is suggested that any eligible woman wishing to have a free mammogram should ring 0800 270 200 to enrol and she will then be given an appointment.

SKYCITY has supported the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation in its endeavours since 2000. This month, Sky Tower is lit up pink every night as part of the Global Illumination campaign for breast cancer awareness and official pink ribbons are on sale throughout SKYCITY. In addition, for every visitor to Sky Tower today, a $1 donation will go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. Funds raised will help the Foundation continue to provide free nationwide community education, research, medical grants and scholarships, seminars, a breast cancer patient register and advocacy.

Sky Tower is joined by other pink illuminated buildings and monuments nationally (including Rotorua’s City Focus Lights, SKYCITY Hamilton, Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre, Dunedin’s Cenotaph, Invercargill’s Water Tower and Gisborne’s Clock Tower) and internationally by landmarks such as Kensington Palace in London, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Tokyo Tower, Table Mountain in Cape Town and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.
