New Chief Executive For CDHB Announced
The Chairman of the Canterbury District Health Board Syd Bradley today announced the appointment of Gordon Davies as the Board’s new Chief Executive. Mr Davies is currently the Deputy Director General, DHB Funding & Performance, for the Ministry of Health.
‘Gordon Davies is a man of exceptional ability and I am delighted that he has accepted the position,’ Mr Bradley said.
‘Through his current position he has an excellent understanding of District Health Boards and he also knows Canterbury very well having spent two years as the General Manager of the (former) Canterbury Area Health Board in 1992/93.’
Mr Davies is a Cantabrian with a strong background in health management. He was educated at Christchurch Boys High School and later attended Canterbury, Otago and Massey Universities where he gained qualifications in management, accountancy and then health management. He holds many fellowships in accountancy, management and health management and trained as a New Zealand and Australian surveyor for the accreditation of health standards.
He started his health career working for the Canterbury and Otago Hospital Boards in accounting, investigation, payroll and statistic departments, moving from there to the Department of Health for a five year stint in 1985. He became the Manager of Corporate Services for the Canterbury Area Health Board in 1990. During this time he worked three days a week as a committee member on the group that produced the Government’s Green & White Paper which was synonymous with the later health reforms.
In his present role, he is responsible for the level and timing of funding flows and therefore has an excellent understanding of population based funding. He also has oversight for all District Health Board strategic and district annual plans.
‘I believe he will make an outstanding Chief Executive for the Canterbury District Health Board. His wealth of health experience together with his knowledge and understanding of financial management will be vital to us as we move to equity.’
‘Mr Davies has an impeccable record in health and has served in a wide variety of roles including seven years as manager of IHC’s southern region.’
Mr Bradley said Gordon Davies would probably take up his new position later next month.
