Nurses support health and wellness checks

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation strongly supports the Green Party policy of free annual health and wellness checks for all New Zealanders, run by nurses said NZNO president Jane O’Malley today.

Jane O’Malley said nurses would welcome an expanded role in health and wellness checks and it was a logical extension on the role nurses were already taking in primary health.

“The role of nurses has changed a lot and this proposal neatly fits with the way practice nurses currently works and the way their role is developing,” said Jane O’Malley.

“It also fits with the collaborative approach nurses in the community have with the broader community, particularly in rural areas."

Jane O’Malley said the policy was totally in keeping with the fundamental tenets of nursing which are about maintaining optimum wellness.

“We would welcome recognition of the increased professional role for nurses as key to delivering health within communities and support the initiative for the positive impact it would have on the health of New Zealanders.”
