Know someone special? Nominate them for an Asthma and Respiratory Achievers’ Award.

Nominations are now open for the Asthma and Respiratory Achievers’ Awards 2005.

Did you know that at least two lads in the local rugby team, seven children in a class, ten people at the local bowls club, might struggle with their breathing?

We don’t know why New Zealand has one of the highest rates of respiratory disease in the world. But we do know that individuals can do a lot for themselves to lessen the effects of their illness.

If you know someone who manages their condition in such a way that they set an example for others, the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation would love to hear from you!

Jane Patterson, Executive Director, says that the Foundation is searching nationwide for people who should be acknowledged.

“We are looking for people with respiratory conditions who inspire us by working towards their goals –either personal or professional­. Despite the extra challenges they face. These people manage their respiratory condition, they don't let it manage them,” she said.

“It is important for us to be able to offer Maori categories as well as general categories for the awards. ­Statistics show that whilst Maori have the same rates of asthma as non-Maori, the occurrence of severe asthma in comparison is frightening.”

To be eligible, nominees must have a diagnosed respiratory condition and be following a management plan. Every nominee receives a certificate. Six supreme award winners will receive their certificates at a special ceremony in Wellington. Nominations close on 30 September 2005.
