SPARC launches Push Play Activator

Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) aims to inspire inactive Kiwis to get active with a new tool called the Push Play Activator.

SPARC has created the Push Play Activator wheel for people who want to get >active, but don't know where to start. It features a range of 30 minute activity options.

SPARC wants Kiwis to understand that physical activity can be slotted into their lives for at least 30 minutes a day - no matter how busy they are.

"The Activator is designed to make physical activity simple, fun and varied. In today's world, many people struggle with the work-family-life balance and often physical activity is not a priority. We want people to enjoy the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle by finding new ways to make physical activity a part of their daily lives," said SPARC's General Manager of Participation, Deb Hurdle.

"From our research, we've found people are looking for a reason why they should get active, and needing practical steps on how to get started. We've looked at people's attitudes, motivations and the barriers to getting active and we're now dedicated to helping them find the answers using the Push Play Activator," she said.

"The Activator features everything - from 'snacktivity' breaks that you can do in front of the TV to outdoor activities. We're also encouraging people to get active together by including activities you can do with friends - it's amazing how much easier and more enjoyable physical activity is with the support of a 'buddy'."

The Activator has been designed as part of SPARC's long-term Push Play >campaign. In its study of New Zealanders' physical activity and nutrition, Obstacles to Action, SPARC identified at least 350,000 Kiwis who want to get active but lead busy lives and sometimes don't know where to start.

"Most of these people identified by our research run busy households. They want to be good role models for their children and be active, but physical activity is low on their list of priorities. What we're saying is, there are simple ways to get started by incorporating physical activity into your daily routine," Deb Hurdle said.

The Push Play Activator is available through the 0800 ACTIVE (0800 228 483) line, Regional Sports Trusts and selected Countdown supermarkets. An on-line version of the Activator is also available on the SPARC website: www.sparc.org.nz .

An advertising campaign promoting the Activator, which features new Push Play music written and performed by Wellington band Rhombus, begins today.
