Take It Outside - Smokefree Party Night @ Thirsty Whale
There’ll be no-smoking indoors this Friday night at the Thirsty Whale, West Quay, Ahuriri. It’s ‘take it outside’
smokefree party night at the Thirsty Whale – that means no smoking inside the bar.
Hawke’s Bay District Health Board health promoter, Lee Wright, says ‘take it outside night’ is a joint promotion between
the Thirsty Whale and the DHB.
“It’s going to be great fun and will give people a taste of things to come when all bars go smokefree inside from 10
December.
“There’s plenty happening on the night, from 9:00pm till late. Top band Pulse will be playing, along with Phil from the
Rock, who will be MC. There’ll be heaps of giveaways including mens and womens fragrance and T-shirts. Free nibbles will
be on offer, the Rock ute will be parked up outside, there’ll be games to test your lung power…and the Rock crew will be
there,” Lee said.
Manager of the Thirsty Whale, Keith Price, said staff at the Thirsty Whale were looking forward to the new legislation
coming into effect. “With the well-known health risks around second-hand smoke, our staff are counting down to 10
December,” Keith said.
“It’s going to be pumping here on Friday night and we’re gearing up for a really big celebration,” said Keith Price.
“Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in New Zealand, and kills around 4,700 New Zealanders each
year...that’s why having smokefree bars is the biggest and best thing that’s happened to protect the community’s health
in years,” Lee Wright said.
