Prime Minister to Open Conference

Prime Minister to Open Conference

The Rt Hon Helen Clark will deliver the opening address at the 2004 National Smokefree Conference - 'Tobacco Control - the evidence', in Wellington on 13 September.

Ms Clark was instrumental in the introduction of the ground breaking Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 and has continued to support efforts to reduce tobacco-related harm.

Australian professor and world-renowned tobacco control expert, Simon Chapman, will deliver the keynote presentations on day one of the Conference. Chapman will comment on New Zealand's tobacco control efforts including the recently strengthened Smoke-free Environments Act under the heading "New Zealand: Roll on the Tobacco Industry's Worst Nightmare".

"We're fortunate to have someone of Simon's calibre here in New Zealand", says Iain Potter, Director of the Health Sponsorship Council and Conference Committee Chair. "Simon's experience in the field and intimate knowledge of the tobacco industry make him the ideal person to comment on the issue and give a global perspective as we head into a new era of tobacco control in this country."

'A 'who's who' of tobacco control will be present at the Westpac Stadium over the two days, with this year offering the most robust programme in the conference's eight year history', said Potter. 'With 4,700 New Zealanders dying each year from tobacco-related diseases, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in New Zealand. The conference provides an excellent opportunity to address the issue and work towards solutions."
