“DHB Must Listen To Senior Doctors”

28 June 2004

“DHB Must Listen To Senior Doctors”

“The Canterbury District Health Board must listen to and act on the criticisms by senior doctors of its management restructuring proposal,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.

“Senior doctors believe the restructuring proposal will fail to achieve the fiscal savings claimed by the DHB and risks compromising patient care.”

“Ironically the thrust of the proposal is to undermine one of the most important parts of the district health board (Christchurch Hospital) which is actually working very well, is well-managed and is fiscally responsible.”

“A repetitive part of the history of our health system is bureaucrats making decisions against the advice of those who know what works and doesn’t work. It would be nice if history didn’t repeat itself at Canterbury,” concluded Mr Powell.
