“Senior Doctors Wish Nurses The Best In National Collective Agreement Ballot”
“Senior doctors wish nurses the best in their ballot over whether to initiate negotiations for a national collective agreement with district health boards,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.
“Even though our unresolved national negotiations have been going for over a year and have gone through difficult times, we still see considerable benefits in trying to achieve a national agreement.”
“Both the nursing and medical workforces face serious shortages due to factors such as the neglect of workforce planning in the 1990s and strong international competition. These shortages make it more difficult for district health boards to provide the services that patients require and deserve. A national agreement would make New Zealand better placed to overcome these threatening shortages.”
“National agreements are also best placed to overcome unfairness and inequities in employment conditions between district health boards,” concluded Mr Powell.
