Nurses Organisation Signals Readiness For Fair Pay On International Midwives’ Day

“The Professional skills of Midwives’ must be recognised and rewarded with fair pay,” said New Zealand Nurses Organisation president Jane O’Malley today.

“Midwives and their nursing colleges have waited too long to be paid fairly compared to other professions requiring similar skills, effort and responsibility.”

Today is international midwives day. Speaking at a Hamilton gathering of NZNO delegates, Jane O’Malley said Midwives and nurses were determined to end generations of low pay in 2004.

On May 10th NZNO 20,000 members in 21 DHBs, including 1,000 midwives, will begin voting on joining national pay negotiations.

“A “yes” vote around the country will mean nurses and midwives unite in national bargaining for the first time in 13 years,” she said.

“Our members know the best way to achieve a Fair Pay settlement is by negotiating together.”

“International Midwives’ Day is a timely reminder of the skills and professionalism of our members and the need for recognition through Fair Pay,” she said.
