College welcomes move away from ‘blame’ culture

The College of GPs has welcomed ACC initiatives away from the requirement to find fault in medical treatment.

“The key direction is patient safety through better and safer delivery of medical services,” College deputy president Dr Jonathan Fox said today.

“They have signalled a new way of working with the sector to deal with adverse treatment injuries promptly, to learn from them, and prevent them happening again.

Dr Fox congratulated ACC on the constructive and transparent process they had gone through to set the new direction.

While there is still detail to be sighted, “it is a significant shift that shows they have listened to the sector and are now moving away from a culture of blame to focus on patient safety.”
