Strong Local Support for
Redwood Lodge Strike
New Zealand Nurses Organisation organiser Shane Vugler said today’s strike by NZNO members at Rotorua’s Redwood Lodge Rest Home and Hospital has been strongly supported by locals.
Around 60 NZNO members picketed Redwood Lodge today, seeking minimum staffing levels in their collective agreement.
Their employer, NZ Lifecare will not agree to the level of staffing NZNO members believe is necessary for the safety and quality care of the elderly residents.
Shane Vugler said NZNO members were taking industrial action because adequate staff was necessary to provide quality care.
Redwood staff are also angry at a pay offer from NZ Lifecare Ltd. which would take the hourly rate for most staff to $10.60.
Redwood staff plan to take strike action again next week, with a 24 hour stoppage planned for Tuesday and Thursday next week.
