Cervical Screening Audit

04 July 2003

MEDIA RELEASE MEDIA RELEASE MEDIA RELEASE

CERVICAL SCREENING AUDIT

NCWNZ applauds the decision of the Minister of Health, The Hon, Annette King, to refer progress on the Gisborne Cervical Screening Enquiry to the Auditor General. Dr Euphemia McGoogan's report raises serious questions on the implementation of the recommendations of the Gisborne enquiry. These require early resolution.

National President, Beryl Anderson said that "The women of New Zealand deserve and need to have confidence in safe, high quality and well audited screening programmes particularly in the area of cervical screening. The Gisborne enquiry demonstrated that the country's cervical screening programme fell short of the ideal in many ways."

An investigation by the Auditor General will provide the needed assurance that we are achieving a robust and safe programme in which all women can feel confident.

NCWNZ continues to monitor the progress on the Gisborne enquiry and the issue of national audits is a topic that will be discussed at our annual meeting in September.
