Government Helps Bail Out Water Safety

Water Safety New Zealand today acknowledged Government support in allocating $500,000 to supplement the shortfall in New Zealand Lottery Grants Board allocations made for this year.

Executive Director Alan Muir was thrilled with the announcement. “We are ecstatic with this grant from Government which will mean that quality water safety education programmes can still be delivered to communities throughout New Zealand.”

“This will enable swimming, boating, fishing, pre-school and other initiatives to continue at a time when significant advances have been made in reducing the drowning toll. Without such assistance the ability to provide this support to the community in the future would have been seriously curtailed.

Of equal importance is the positive identification by Government to look at the need for a coordinated, long-term response to funding for the principal outdoor safety organisations which rely on New Zealand Lottery Grants Board allocations for their on going viability,” Alan Muir said.

The support is timely as we enter into the summer holiday period, when high numbers of the community are involved in water based activities commented Mr Muir.
