Success for New Zealand at World Cookbook Awards
Two New Zealand authors were this week judged winners at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2002:
The Outdoor Table by Garth Hokianga is the winner in the category ‘Best Entertaining book in the English language’.
Raffaela Delmonte’s The Fragrance of Basil – Food and Memories of my Italian Childhood is the winner in the category Best Food Literature Book in the English language’.
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards have been held in Paris, Versailles and Perigueux since 1995. Attended by the world’s top gourmet media, the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are the only international competition for food and wine books. According to organiser Edouard Cointreau, ‘cookbook bestsellers in a small country like New Zealand reach the same sales as bestsellers in France, a country 20 times larger.’
More than one billion food and wine books are sold each year globally. Of these, some 3500 of the top titles compete in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The category winners are now finalists in the ‘Best in The World’ contest, competing against the other winners in other languages in the same category. The ‘Best in the World’ will be announced February 28, 2003 at the Gala Dinner at the Chateau de Brissac in France.
The Outdoor Table is published in New Zealand by Penguin Books, and is priced at $34.95.
The Fragrance of Basil – Memories of my Italian
Childhood is also published in New Zealand by Penguin Books,
and is priced at $34.95
