Follow the law – set the example
Refusing to obey the law is shameful for such a public figure as the chairman of the country’s largest health board, according to Lyall Thurston, National President of disability association New Zealand CCS.
Wayne Brown should accept the need for accessible toilets in his building development, says Mr Thurston.
“This tantrum is a disgrace for someone employed in public health. While he doesn’t currently employ anybody who uses a wheelchair does this mean he will discriminate in the future – including someone well qualified for the job, for example in a management position?
“One would think the statutorily required Disability Support Advisory Committee to the Auckland District Health Board is suffering apoplexy with this outburst. The Chairman should be leading by example.
“Follow the Building Act Mr Brown – just like
everybody else. It’s there to ensure equal access for all.
And shame on the Building Industry Authority if they even
consider his request.”
