New President of Newspaper Publishers’ Association
Mr Julian Smith OBE, Chairman and Managing Director of Allied Press, owners of the Otago Daily Times has been appointed President and Chairman of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association (NPA) and the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA).
Mr Smith replaces Mr Rick Neville of Independent Newspapers Ltd who has resigned following his appointment as Managing Director of News Ltd’s Advertiser Newspapers in Adelaide, publishers of The Advertiser and Sunday Mail.
Mr Smith (59) has been on the Board of NPA since 1981 and was Chairman of NZPA from 1983 to 1989. He is one of the fifth generation of his family involved in Dunedin’s newspaper industry. He is also a director of Arthur Barnett Ltd, and Chairman of the Greymouth Evening Star.
The NPA is the
trade association of the newspaper industry in New Zealand
while NZPA is the cooperatively owned news bureau supplying
local and overseas news coverage to the country’s newspapers
on a seven-day 24- hour basis.
