Rigorous monitoring allays Parry fears

“The appointment of Dr Graham Parry to Middlemore hospital under rigorous monitoring conditions signals the success of conditions on practice imposed by the Medical Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal,” said Parents Centre President, Sharron Cole.

The return of Dr Parry to obstetric and early pregnancy loss ultra-sound practice at Middlemore Hospital will mean more women will have access to treatment through ultra-sound diagnosis. Dr Parry’s appointment will be on the basis of an interim practising certificate until February when, based on an assessment of his performance, an ongoing practising certificate will be considered. Between now and February, Dr Parry will be subject to on-going audits and checking procedures by both Dr Parry’s peers and a lay person.

Mrs Cole acknowledged that Dr Parry made some grave errors of judgement concerning the treatment of some of his Northland patients, including Colleen Poutsma; “But we also acknowledge that particularly in light of current skill shortages, Dr Parry’s knowledge and experience remains valuable”

“It is important to note that the conditions of practice imposed on Dr Parry at Middlemore Hospital will ensure that the women of South Auckland will receive safe and competent treatment. His patients will also have an opportunity to raise any concerns or anxieties through a feedback process at the hospital,” said Mrs Cole.

As well as holding the position of President of Parents Centre, Mrs Cole has a wide range of experience in ethical and medico-legal matters. In light of this experience, Mrs Cole believes that the rigorous process of checks put in place regarding Dr Parry’s competency levels will be sufficient to ensure that Dr Parry’s patients will benefit from this decision and any exposure to risk will be minimised.
