Aids Foundation Launches New ‘Toolbox’ Resource

Aids Foundation Launches New ‘Toolbox’ Resource

As part of its campaign to highlight men’s sexual health issues, the AIDS Foundation has released a new resource to help men practise safe sex.

The Toolbox is a cardboard box, similar to those used for nails or screws in hardware suppliers, which contains a selection of four condoms of different shapes and sizes, two water-based lubricants and an “operations manual” that gives men hints about how to use condoms most effectively.

Said AIDS Foundation Executive Director, Kevin Hague:

“One of the goals of this whole campaign is to get more men using condoms, all of the time. Not just gay men: ALL men. The Toolbox deals with the problems that are sometimes reported with condoms, that may otherwise cause men not to bother. Issues of slipping off, breaking, or excessive tightness are easily solved by using the right size and shape condom for the individual man, and making sure it’s used correctly.”

An earlier version of the Toolbox, part of an AIDS Foundation campaign called Hardwear in 1999, was a huge success and the Foundation has regularly received calls for a repeat since. An initial promotion of the Toolbox has seen some distributed to men on the street in the main centres yesterday, with members of the public even chasing distributors to ensure they received one. Others will be distributed through advertising in particular publications, at community events and from the AIDS Foundation.

Kevin Hague paid particular tribute to the support the Toolbox had received from the business community, including a $60,000 grant from the Positive Action initiative of pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK):

“GSK have always been a terrific supporter of community action on HIV/AIDS, both in New Zealand and worldwide. Our Toolbox was selected for support by Positive Action at an international level, and we’re really proud and grateful for that. In practical terms it has meant that we’ve been able to produce considerably more Toolboxes, which means that the messages (and condoms) they contain will be distributed more broadly than ever before.

And speaking of the condoms, I really want to stress that both Durex and Ansell have once again been fantastic, both donating all the condoms and lube to make this life saving project possible”.
