New Editor for New Zealand Medical Journal

Christchurch surgeon Professor Frank Frizelle has been appointed as the next Editor of the New Zealand Medical Journal.

"We are very pleased that a doctor of Professor Frizelle's calibre will be taking over at the helm of the Journal, particularly with the move towards a completely online publication," said NZMA Chairman Dr John Adams. "Under his leadership, the Medical Journal will continue its tradition of publishing a wide range of important medical research."

"I am delighted to be taking on the role of leading this prestigious institution," Dr Frizelle said. "It will be a challenging time, both for myself and for the readers, with the change to an electronic format for the Journal, and I am looking forward to it and can see many advantages."

The NZMJ, first published in 1887, is New Zealand's leading medical research publication and is held in high regard by the profession.

Professor Frizelle will take up the appointment in mid-June, taking over from Professor Gary Nicholls who has been Editor for the last three years.

Professor Frizelle is Professor of Colorectal Surgery at Christchurch Hospital and Medical School. He qualified as a doctor at Otago Medical School in 1985 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1992.

He has worked in the prestigious Mayo Clinic in the United States, and in Scotland. He has been involved in a large number of research projects, and is widely published. He was also been awarded a large number of scholarships, grants and awards.

From July the NZMJ will become an entirely electronic web-based Journal, a decision made following an extended review of the NZMJ and careful examination of a number of other publishing options. This will ensure the future viability and relevance of the Journal and ensure the New Zealand medical community continues to have the opportunity to have their research published in a peer reviewed New Zealand-based scientific journal. The electronic NZMJ will be archived and fully searchable, making it extremely useful to readers.
