Vehicle Registrations Up Again In March

Figures released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show a 17.6 percent increase in vehicle registrations last month compared to March 2001 - the twelfth straight month that registrations have been up on the previous year.

There were 22,797 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles last month, compared with 19,379 in March 2001.

First-time car registrations rose from 15,288 in March 2001 to 17,933 last month. New car registrations were up 12.8 percent, from 4,816 to 5,432, while used import registrations rose 19.4 percent, from 10,472 to 12,501.

The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Ford with 17.2 percent, ahead of Holden with 16.0 percent and Toyota with 14.2 percent.

The three most popular new car models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, Ford Falcon and Ford Mondeo.

Truck registrations were up 28 percent, from 1,890 in March 2001 to 2,417 this March. Motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) were up from 320 to 330, while trailer registrations were up from 1,438 to 1,562. Tractor registrations rose from 118 to 196, while bus registrations were unchanged at 76.
