Vehicle Registrations Up For Eighth Month In A Row

Figures released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show a 24 percent increase in vehicle registrations last month compared to November 2000 - the eighth straight month that registrations have been up on the previous year.

There were 22,555 first-time registrations of new and used imported vehicles last month, compared with 18,175 in November 2000. Registrations were also up from October this year when 21,899 vehicles were registered for the first time.

Car registrations rose 30 percent, from 13,437 in November 2000 to 17,199 last month. The number of car registrations was up slightly from October this year when 16,863 were registered.

Of the 17,199 first-time car registrations last month, 5,575 were new and 11,624 were used, compared with 4,591 new and 8,846 used in November 2000.

The market share leader for new car registrations last month was Toyota with 21.0 percent, just ahead of Ford with 20.1 percent, followed by Holden with 17.0 percent. The three most popular models for the month were the Holden VX Commodore, the Toyota Corolla and the Ford Mondeo.

Truck registrations for November were up 7.5 percent, from 1,977 last year to 2,125 this year. This was also an increase from October this year, when 1,933 trucks were registered. Motorcycle registrations (over 60cc) were up from 344 in November 2000 to 395 last month (351 in October), while trailers were up from 1,864 to 1,952 (1,895 in October). Tractor registrations rose from 179 to 359 (381 in October), while bus registrations were down from 88 to 83 (84 in October).
