Marlborough District Hospice Service

The Salvation Army has confirmed to the Marlborough District Health Board that they are ready to proceed with the development of an integrated palliative care service in the Marlborough District. The likely date for the commencement of the provision of services by The Salvation Army is expected to be July 2002, following the completion of construction of a stand alone hospice building.

A significant amount of work has already been carried out by the Blenheim South Rotary Club to establish the Hospice Trust. The Trust will be the primary fund raiser from the community and owner of the Hospice assets such as the Hospice buildings. Early indications suggest that the annual operating costs will be approximately $600,000 with 1/3 funding provided by the District Health Board.

Major David Rodgers, of The Salvation Army says, “The development of a stand alone hospice as part of an integrated palliative care service is viewed as central to the Salvation Army’s mission of Caring for People, Transforming Lives and Reforming Society. In partnership with the Blenheim community it is our goal to provide a diverse range of services aimed at providing holistic care and support to persons who are suffering from a terminal illness as well as providing support to immediate family who are directly affected by the clients illness.”
